In 1946, Max and Victor Hall looked around at the rapidly growing city of San Diego, California and saw that they could improve the quality of its businesses. The brothers formed Meeting Services, Inc. (MSI) which provided audio/visual equipment to local companies. Over the years, as San Diego’s industry and tourism expanded, MSI did as well, expertly designing and installing state-of-the-art sound systems for the smallest corporate meetings to the largest conferences, conventions, trade shows, fundraisers, sporting events, artistic performances, and political speeches.
Today, MSI offers a complete line of event production, technological support, and equipment rental services and continues to ensure the success, efficiency, and productivity of our clients’ special gatherings, large and small, around the block and around the world.
Clients can trust MSI for the simplest order—a flipchart and colored markers—to the most involved request--1500 lighting instruments, 22 separate sound systems, a full video production suite, design and technical direction, and a staff of engineers and technicians—we can contract, design, deliver, and support any project, anywhere, at anytime, with the best and newest equipment available. Need to light up Staples Center for your High Definition live TV shoot? MSI can do it. Your show is in Malaysia, Cancun, or the Bahamas? MSI has been there. You say your event takes place in a barren parking lot, on a lake, on the side of a frozen mountain, or on top of the Hoover Dam—don’t worry—MSI can make it happen for you, and we’ll do it quickly, smoothly, and with pride.
Even though MSI produces shows across the United States and internationally, we have never forgotten our community roots. Lucky attendees of local Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Beatles, and Rolling Stones concerts have rocked out to their favorite artists courtesy of MSI’s professional audio design and equipment. Historical hotel giants, the El Cortez and the Hotel del Coronado, repeatedly utilized MSI’s audio/visual rental and staging division. MSI is proud to be the in-house production company for the San Diego Convention Center (our partner since its opening in 1989), as well as the San Diego Marriott, and the Town & Country Hotel. The San Diego Chargers, the San Diego Padres, the Make A Wish Foundation, the San Diego Symphony, and the Rotary Club rely on MSI, just as numerous community theater groups, churches, and civic organizations trust us with their projects, meetings, blood drives, parades, and parties.
Our long-term clients form the cornerstone of our business, and our satisfied customers have graciously recommended us to serve many clients in venues far from San Diego. With their consistent trust and support, MSI has continued to grow and innovate. We are proud to be production partners with AARP, ESPN, Lawson Software, Major League Baseball, Microsoft, the NBA and the National Football League Players Association. MSI has provided services to every U.S. President since Harry Truman. Our most recent government work includes the United States Homeland Security Department.
From our humble beginnings, MSI has grown to become a major provider in the industry. Our production warehouse and office complex is a two-level structure of over 65,000 square feet, which includes on-site and satellite storage facilities. Over the years, video projection, automated lighting, computer graphics, line array speakers, and digital audio mixers have all been introduced to our clients with great success. We are also pleased to offer our clients the use of the newest generation of micro video projectors for their media presentations. Over 100 talented people are happy to call MSI their full-time employer. Hundreds more work with us on a project-by-project basis. But through all of our growth, MSI has never forgotten that all of our hard work is about making you look and sound terrific.
Under one roof, MSI delivers a full range of production support services. Our audio, lighting, video, scenic, and rigging departments are all well-staffed and equipped to take on any project or special event. In addition to sound, lights, and video, we supply drape, scaffolding, electrical distribution, and expendables through the MSI Store. In need of rental gear? MSI has an enormous inventory and staff to fill your precise order. If all you are looking for is two sheets of gel, feel free to drop by the MSI Store, or call ahead and we will have it waiting for you. If a full-service package is more of what you had in mind, an Account Executive and Production Manager can coordinate all of the details. MSI understands that you, the client, come first: clear internal communication between our department heads ensure that all of the logistics of design, trucking, travel, and venue interface are attended to long before your show’s load-in. MSI’s department heads share a common workspace--there are no secrets, no surprises, and few mistakes. We understand the nuances of the producer-supplier relationship. Our one-stop shopping and seamless integration make you look good. That’s what we’re all about.
There’s a reason that “audio” comes first in the term “A/V”. It’s a simple fact that your presenters need to be heard. Our audio philosophy is to provide the best solution for the job, whether for a small group meeting or for a large concert. Our equipment is set up so that everybody can hear at the same volume and that your sightlines are not blocked. Department integration is a major key to our success. The audio, set, and lighting teams will always concur about where the speakers are to be placed. Those details are defined ahead of time using our 3D CAD software. Our crew is experienced, professional, and amiable. Making your event sound its best is their ultimate objective.
MSI tailors the equipment to your needs. We stock over 500 JBL, Meyer, TAD, EAW, Apogee, Woodworx, Ramsa, and Yamaha speakers with appropriate amplifiers, processing, rigging, stands, and brackets. Yamaha, Soundcraft and Ramsa consoles handle front of house or monitor mixing. Our new push into digital consoles allows us thousands of input channels for the most complex productions. MSI can mic up your talent with any of our 225 wireless systems or 1500 wired microphones. We can play back or record on any device, including classics such as the 360 Systems Instant Replay, Otari half-track reel, and reel recorders. We can process anything from our computer controller XTA system processors to that 20 year-old Lexicon Prime Time that your talent just won’t sing without. We also have miles of XLR, multi-channel snakes, and speaker cable.
MSI’s present inventory can support 80 concurrent breakout rooms, eight general sessions of 2500, and six general sessions of 5000. If you want to invite 65,000 of your closest friends to the stadium for a presentation or concert, we’ll provide the concert-size line array system, digital-mixing consoles, and in-ear monitor equipment. With MSI’s educated staff and comprehensive equipment, your show is guaranteed to succeed.
MSI will portray you in the best light--whether you need to illuminate one podium for a small meeting, a concert rider, or an entire amusement park during the holiday season. We have the staff and equipment ready to produce themed or color-balanced video lighting for business theater, fashion shows, spook houses, theater, dance productions, or an 120 foot-long X Games skateboard ramp.
MSI is San Diego’s largest and most complete lighting company. In-house we store over 400 Source Four and Shakespeare lekos, 800 Source 4 Pars, and 1500 PAR 64’s, as well as hundreds of Fresnels, MR-16 strip lights, cycs, PAR 46, 56, and ACLs. You can control it all with any configuration of ETC Sensor or Strand dimming by way of an ETC, Hog, or Leprecon console. If you need your lights to really move, San Diego’s largest intelligent lighting inventory consists of Cyberlights, Studio Colors, Vari*lites and the industry standard Martin Mac 2K/700/500 units. For something a little different, we have over 500 Color Kinetics iCove LEDs, a Catalyst System, and 5000 feet of twinkle lights.
Hang any or all of it with our 3200 feet of truss; hook it up using our 10 miles of multicable or 20,000 feet of pin cable, camlock, or DMX cable. We can fly a dozen shows at once using 100 CM Loadstar motors. If thinking about all of this gives you a headache, we offer customized design services for all of your illumination needs.
From small-screen computer projection to multi-camera arena-sized image magnification, MSI’s video services can’t be beat. We offer recording, playback, projection, and switching packages to cover any need or budget. Projectors from Barco, Christie, Digital Projection, Sanyo, and Sharp can fill any size screen with video images or your high-resolution data. Our component digital system comes with Sony Digital triax cameras and an Echolab switcher, offering true digital component from camera to tape or hard drive.
MSI’s video department recently underwent a million-dollar upgrade. We are San Diego’s first supplier to offer the Christie Roadster S+16Ks, which delivers 15,000 ANSI lumens at 1400 X 1050 resolution. Feed these our Vista Montage or new Folsom Encore system, and you’ll have a big, bright, all-digital image that will be larger than a house. We have a couple 80-foot widescreens for your big product rollout too. Does your booth require a dozen 50-inch HD plasma screens? Need to show your new game system in 720p? Need to see your three-screen live from the web multi-site product demo complete with a High-Res quad split in the downstage monitors? We have the technology, talent, and understanding to handle it all.
We can read, alter, draw, and plot in nearly any format used today. Our full-sized plotters generate fantastic, detailed drawings of your project. Forget FedEx--send us your files directly to our secure FTP site. We’ll manage your presenters, a speaker concierge service, your graphic artist, and that 24-station Internet café that provides your attendees with much-needed e-mail access at your event.
We have the ability to design, paint, cover, install, and build almost any set for an industrial production. Our in-house wood, metal, and paint shops handle 90% of our scenic projects. For projects that exceed our in-house capabilities, we rely on our long-term partnership with the San Diego Opera Scenic Shop.
We carry a huge collection of flats, stage jacks, and painted drops, as well as cycs, ground rows, torms, teasers, and rigging. Check out our extensive photo gallery for some ideas. We would be proud to add your show to our gallery.
MSI also stocks all that of other stuff you need to turn an event into your show. Are you looking for 500 feet of 25-foot high black 24oz. velour sewn with 50% fullness, rigged as a center-close traveler? We’ve got it. Does your show call for a complete MATV system run throughout your venue? Six channel, 30-drop RTS system with a 4 up 2 channel UHF wireless? We’ll get you those things too. We have presidential podiums and matching steps for even the most vertically challenged of dignitaries. We have that thing that will get our Mac 2Ks rigged just right under the stage so that they sweep the bottom of the car just as it hits its mark. We have adaptor plates to place our line array speakers on a cart, a beach, or a boat. We’ve got smoke, fog, rain, snow, disco balls, rope lights, police beacons, and the little thing on the podium that triggers the mini disc player for that perfect sound effect—not to mention at least one guy in the back of the shop who knows how it all works.
