Form before function or visa versa? Ask the designers and you’ll always hear “Form first!”, but ask the producers, engineers and technicians the same question and chances are that you’ll get the opposite. Have you ever walked into a load-in where the art director is arguing with the A1 because there is PA hanging in front of his beautiful set? Or the A1 is wondering why nobody told him there would be a lighting truss flown directly in front of the PA? We’ve all seen it and chances are it happened because the design team and the technical director may not have had the time or information to integrate their departments before meeting on-site.
At MSI, our designers work closely with our production team to see that systems integration and spatial relationship issues are worked out on paper, not on the show floor. We create a full set of drawings for every event we support, including plan, side and front views, as well as a 3D model, all in VectorWorks so we know exactly how it will look and work well before we load the trucks.
